Artist Statement
Socially based and dialogue driven, I develop art with the intention of igniting and inspiring positive change in our communities. My work celebrates the intersection of the visual arts and community engagement and confronts viewers with difficult and sometimes uncomfortable civic issues. I dissolve traditional perceptions of the way art and galleries should act and look. My artwork and installations transform galleries and public spaces into deeply meaningful, memorable and educational experiences.
Frequently working with nontraditional media like worn homeless shelter mats, found cardboard and boxes, old ladders and fallen wood, my sculptures reflect the beauty in the fragile and discarded. By confronting subjects like homelessness, mental illness and inclusivity, I aim to change misconceptions and conventional perceptions and to nurture new connections and conversations. By creating contemporary visual perspectives, I tug at the hearts of the community further emphasizing that the visual arts are an effective a tool to build awareness and change.
